Government cancellation of GCSE and A-Level Exams

As you are aware, the government has cancelled GCSE and A-Level exams for Year 11s as part of its response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak in the United Kingdom.

This has been emotionally devastating for many and leaves everyone with unanswered questions about how qualifications will be awarded and the impact this will have on their child’s future.

The Department for Education (DfE),Ofqual and Exam Boards (AQA, Edexcel, WJEC etc.) have confirmed that GCSE grades will be awarded by centre assessment, as judged by teachers from a range of evidence, including mock exams, other non-exam assessments, homework and any other record of student performance, to provide a fair and reflective grade for that student.

Inclusion Hampshire’s tutors will be working alongside representatives from your child’s school to help provide the most relevant and accurate evidence to aid in this process.

These results will be announced on Thursday 20th August 2020.

Inclusion Hampshire will have no role in providing a rank order for each grade.

Functional Skills

On 9 April, following demand for clarification on other non-GSCE qualifications Ofqual published its proposals for other qualifications, including Functional Skills.

Ofqual stated:

‘We recognise students taking qualifications, alongside or instead of GCSEs, AS and A levels, to progress to further or higher education urgently need to know what arrangements will be put in place for them. We have worked closely with the Department for Education, awarding organisations and regulators in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland to develop our approach and are today confirming that these qualifications will be awarded a calculated result.’

Having contacted our exam boards, no further clarification was available and they were unable to confirm whether they will continue to offer on-line demand assessments they have been providing during this period.

Further information is due out this week, and Matt Atkinson, Our Head of Pre 16 Service will contact parents/ carers when the implications of this for our learners is confirmed.
